Down Syndrome Definition

Is a genetic disorder of uncertain cause which is characterized by an extra chromosome in every cell throughout the body This extra chromosome produces some alterations in physical and mental development. Persons with Down Syndrome typically will have varying degrees of mental retardation, poor muscle tone, delayed motor skills, and may have other physical problems such as heart defect and respiratory infections. A down syndrome birth occurs about once in every 800 to 1000 live births.

Each individual has his or her own unique personality abilities, and talents. Individuals with Down Syndrome benefit from loving homes, early intervention, special education, appropriate medical care, and positive public attitudes.
